Coalminers Doughter

Well I was born a coalminers doughter
in a cabin on a hill in Butcher Holler
we were poor but we had love
thats a one thing that daddy make sure of
he shuffled coal to make poor mans dollar

Well my daddy worked all night on a coalmine
all day long in the field ahowing corn
mummy rocked the babes at night
and red the bible by the candle light
and everything would start from break till dawn

Well my daddy loved us kids on a miners pay
and mummy scrubed dark clothes on a washboard every day
well Id seen her fingers bleed
to complain there was no need
she always smiled on mummies understanding way

In the summertime we didnt have shoes to wear
but in the wintertime wed all got a brand new pair
from Salina to Cattlemorn money made from sellina horn
daddy always managed to get the money somewhere

Well Im proud to be a coalminers doughter
I remember well the well were Ive drawn waters
well the work weve done was hard
at night we slept cause we were tired
Id never thought Id ever leave on Butcher Holler

Well a lot of things have change since I went back then
and its so good to be to be back home again
not so much love any more not the leasure any more
exept the memories of a coalminers doughter
